About

Dorothy may have said, “there’s no place like home,” but I believe there’s no place like Oz.

Hi, I’m Heather, a 30-something career counselor turned career breaker. After years of encouraging university students to pursue their dreams, I decided to take my own advice! In May 2010, I left a wonderful home and community in Virginia, USA to experience life in Australia (aka Oz) on the Work & Holiday Visa. I traveled around the country for 3.5 months before stopping in Sydney to temporarily live and work in the city’s Inner West suburbs. After spending my first Christmas abroad and ringing in 2011 at the Harbour, I hopped in a campervan with my friends Adam and Nicole to explore more of beautiful Australia. I returned home in late April, 2011, and now I need to begin exploring the answer to the question everyone’s been asking — “So what’s next?!”

No matter what comes next, travel will always be a part of my life. While the year in Australia was my first go at long-term travel, I’ve previously visited London, Germany, Ireland, Barcelona, Istanbul, Paris, and Toronto. India tops the wish-list of future international destinations. A road trip around the USA is my next big travel goal.

What do I write about? My love of sports — Aussie and American. My competing interests in eating healthfully and satisfying a wicked sweet tooth — and how that led me to work for an organic food store while simultaneously tackling a self-imposed “No Macaron Left Behind” challenge. Food — the simple but delicious, creative, perfectly executed, or disastrous. My best and worst days. The beautiful places I’ve seen and people I’ve met. Discovering what life has in store after pursuing and living my biggest dream.

Thank you to everyone who followed my journey in Australia and for your encouragement and support! Hope you enjoy reading the adventures to come.

If I can answer any questions about Oz, don’t hesitate to email me on the Contact page, comment on a post, or connect with me on Twitter.
