Ask any Charlottesville or Albemarle County local, and you’ll hear that we’re a community that LOVES to support local business. Ask anyone who knows me personally, and you’ll hear that I LOVE food.
A few weeks ago, Gav and I woke up early to visit nearby Carter Mountain Orchard, an apple orchard that’s been part of the community for a century. For a month or so during the fall, the orchard hosts the “Apple Harvest Celebration” and offers longer hours for visitors, apple cider, apple cider donuts, and, you guessed it, more apple products for sale.
In addition to loving food, I adore the fall. In fact, it’s the only season with its own board on my Pinterest account.
Gav snapped photos of me grinning ear to ear while I enjoyed the fall colors and views from atop the mountain. I dusted off my D-SLR for the first time in months.
You can stroll through the orchard and pick your own apples. You can buy various jams, butters, and fall goodies. You can follow in our footsteps and indulge in a homemade apple cider donut.
If we had packed coffee and breakfast (or um, I don’t know, A JACKET), we could have stayed for an hour or two!
Gav was a good sport and allowed me to take pictures of our shadows. Or maybe it’s because he was too tired to protest — he hadn’t even been in Virginia for 48 hours!
A pic of the same apple from five years ago!
And hey, if apples aren’t your thing, the good folks at Carter Mountain had dozens of pumpkins on site as well.
The trip to Carter Mountain helped tick off a few items on my fall bucket list, and I’ll be sharing more about bucket-list-conquering in my next two posts.
I come from the other side of the water, from a cider producing county (Somerset). I have never heard of apple cider donuts sound, but they sound amazingly tasty. I think I’ll have to investigate
Nico, they’re definitely worth the investigation 🙂
